Tony leans against the wall while Rush sprawls in the chair opposite me. “So, Derek’s crawling out?”

“Yes, boss.” Tony straightens. “Big shipment coming in. Word from Mr. Grim says it’s a Finnegan package. Rumor has it, Finnegan’s going to be at River Water tonight.”

I tap a pen against the table. “Waiting on news, skulking at the edges so he looks clean if something goes wrong.” Like me.

I was going to take Rose to a fancy part of Queenstown, but this is better. “Book a table, Rush, for two. Seven p.m.”

Rush lifts his brows. I glance at Tony.

“This is close to Beale Street. I take it we don’t have more?” I ask.

“Been digging, Boss, but even Garcia hasn’t been there.”

That he knows of, but I keep that to myself. I’ll give Finnegan his due; he can play cards close when he wants. “Watch the street and have someone ready to follow Finnegan if he shows, but we do nothing.”

Rush sighs. “You’re still using her? If we see him, take him out.”

“Don’t fucking tell me how to do my job, Rush,” I say. “Taking him out means others will seek revenge, like Vitale. I need to do it where we’re untouchable. Rush, you stay and man operations on this side. Tony, orchestrate a straightforward surveillance, and a few extra hidden security.”

“Got it, Boss.” He hesitates a nanosecond before leaving. Rush sits there, like a black cloud.

“Niko—”

“I know what the fuck I’m doing.”

“Which is?”

“Ending this once and for all.”

He nods. “And Rose? Does she get a happy ending?”

Without me. “She gets a safe future, yes.” I get to work and don’t look up until he leaves.
